Lutherans
The Lutherans were the first major protestant group. It's named after Martin Luther , a catholic priest who preached a doctrine he believed to be closer to biblical doctrine. His most prominent work "The Ninety-Five Theses" was written in 1517; three years later in 1521 with the Edict of Worms he was excommunicated and branded a heretic by the Catholic Church.

The first King to openly declare himself a Lutheran was Christian III of Denmark , following his victory in the short civil war in 1537. The German states of electorate states of Saxony, Hesse and the Electoral Palatinate of the Rhine created the first Lutheran Military institution, the Schmalkaldic League; the union was short lived only lasting 10 months until it was crushed by the Holy Roman Empire in the Summer of 1547. In the aftermath of the bloody 30 Years War Lutheranism was finally freed from Habsburg oppression of the Holy Roman Empire the Northern German states of Hanover, Oldenburg, Saxony and Baden all decleared themselves as Lutheran.

Anglicians
The other prominent Protestant Church is Anglicanism. Unlike the others, born in theological debate and dissidence, Anglicanism was an idea created by the British King Regent Henry VIII. It is the doctrine that the Crown should by autonomous of the powers of the Papal States; unlike in other Protestant Churches the Anglican Church makes the monarch the dictator of faith just as Catholics in regards to the Pope. For this reason, in at least the early years, Anglicanism although a heresy was largely seen as Catholic in it's liturgy.
