Resilience is a gameplay mechanic introduced in Total War: Three Kingdoms. Character's resilience indicates their health status in the game. In romance mode, characters can gain extra resilience, which will enable them to survive and recover from fatal wounds.

Overview[]

In Three Kingdoms, characters are not immortal, and may be slain in battle. However, more resilient characters may survive a deadly blow, and live to fight another day. This is reflected in a character's resilience, which is indicated by the heart symbol on their unit card. Player can hover the cursor over it to see more details.

Characters with no resilience who falls in battle will immediately die. However, a character with one level of resilience will not. They will become wounded and will take time to recover. When in wounded status, the character will continue to travel with their army. While they recover from the wounded status, their unit card will be greyed out and they will not attend any battles the army engages in during the recovery time.

When the characters become available to fight again, it will take further turns for their resilience to return to its former level, which is indicated by the colour of the heart symbol. If they fall in battle again during this period, they will not benefit from the protection of resilience, and will die.

Certain characters - such as Cao Cao for example - begin play with a bonus level of resilience granted by his background epithet. In Romance mode, all characters who level up to rank 4 also gain a bonus level of resilience.[1] It is possible for a character to have multiple levels of resilience, which means they can be slained in multiple battles before entering the wounded stage.

Aside from background and character experience, improving character attributes and becoming legendary can also grants bonus resilience.

Legendary Character and Resilience[]

Main article: Legendary Character

Some characters, both non-legendary and legendary ones have Resilience ability that allows them to survive being fatal wounded or even killed in battle.

Legendary characters starts out with resilience, meaning that they can't be easily killed on level 1. Non-legendary characters do not have resilience on level 1. However, they will gain resilience with enough Attributes gained. After gaining enough Attributes (exceeding 100 points for one type), non-legendary characters will gain legendary status and resilience with his/her name turned gold, just like those born legendary.

When wounded in battle, legendary characters have a recovery phase before able to fight in a battle again. Also, the character's resilience takes a hit.
