Rhesus is a Homeric-historical and playable character featured in a Total War Saga: Troy. He is an Epic Defender Hero, part of the Thracian culture group. His campaign is only playable after obtaining the Rhesus & Memnon DLC.
Background[]
The son of the mountain muse Euterpe and the tribal king, Eioneus, whose people ruled over the mouth of the River Strymon, mighty Rhesus was a formidable leader from the deep-forested valleys of Thrace. He was a fearsome general who joined arms with Troy, on whose crafts and trade the tribes of Thrace relied heavily.
Wild and battle-hungry, the Thracians rallied under Rhesus' banner in the hopes of securing riches and glory for their homeland. The wild men made up for their lack of military discipline with vast numbers and fearsome resolve, relying on their mastery of their war chariots, pulled by fierce Thracian steeds, which they deployed onto the battlefield to devastating advantage.
According to the Athenian tragedian Euripides, Rhesus arrived in Troy with an army whose vastness defied comprehension, while Rhesus' very appearance sufficed to sow panic among his foes.
Playstyle[]
Although his people are seemingly removed from the conflict raging on the shores of the Aegean Sea, Rhesus has much to gain from rallying the Thracian tribes to Priam's cause. Glory and renown will secure his position as a mighty tribal king, while also maintaining the flow of precious Danaan and Trojan goods into the hands of the Thracian aristocracy. Furthermore, securing Troy's control of the Hellespont will ensure continued trade between Thrace and their Phrygian kin in Asia Minor.
Rhesus' unique potential is based on the old Thracian traditions. He can perform great variety of Thracian rituals which can enhance his civil or military development. He can also summon large armies from the free Thracian folk by providing forests for them to settle and by showing in practice his religious devotion.
The Thracians have distinctive old cults which differ from the new common Olympian traditions of the Aegean world. As a Thracian lord, Rhesus has the sacred obligation to safeguard these traditions by showing his devotion to the cults. He has to manage the devotion of his people to the Thracian cults to benefit both his armies and his settlements.
The Thracian kin is divided into tribes which constantly fight against each other for plunder and many warriors are willing to join the distant successful Thracian ruler who can offer them food supplies and shady forests to settle. He can call upon mighty host armies to ravage the lands of his enemies.
