Saga

The Saga domain is a faction in Fall of the Samurai.

Description[]

The Emperor's Diligence

The Saga domain is ruled by Nabeshima Mochizuru, the latest in a line of daimyo who were given this territory after the Tokugawa won the vicious civil war of the Sengoku Jidai. The Nabeshima did well by being sensible enough to join the Tokugawa cause while there was still some doubt over the result. They did not wait until the Battle of Sekigahara to decide where their true loyalties lay.

The domain includes the port of Nagasaki, a valuable resource for any daimyo. It is here that Japan has its only official trade with the West, and it is here that interesting ideas arrive in the country. Perhaps this knowledge of the harshness of the outside world is what has convinced the Nabeshima to throw their weight behind the Imperial Court rather than the Shogun.

The Nabeshima clan can rely on a few advantages in the coming struggle: they have Western connections and trade that is far ahead of any other domain. In turn, this learning allows them to be artillery experts, and have good shipbuilding and industrial facilities. The modern world has much to offer to those who would embrace it. Interestingly, the historical Nabeshima Mochizuru eventually resigned his position and left Japan to study in England.

General Information[]

  • Gunnery (+5 to the accuracy of all artillery pieces)
  • Engineering (-10% reduction to the recruitment and upkeep costs of ships)
  • Industry (+20% to growth from industrial buildings)
  • Rangaku (Trade with the Western Powers has been established)

The Saga start the campaign in the north-west corner of Kyushu, a very defensible position. Kyushu has many valuable provinces, including two coal-specialty provinces that, combined with the Saga's Engineering trait, give the Saga the cheapest ships of any clan. The increased growth from industrial buildings marginally increase town wealth growth per turn which can add up significantly in the long run. The Saga also have the best artillery in the late game, and are the only faction to begin the game with a modern artillery piece: a unit of Parrott Guns.

The Saga are unusual in that their only enemy at the beginning of the campaign is a fair distance away: the island faction of Tsushima-Fuchu. Fortunately, Saga domain has a stronger navy than Tsushima's, so ferrying its army over is not too difficult. Pacifying Tsushima-Fuchu early is very useful, as leaving it alone can cause it to raid and invade from the north at will.

The Saga begin the campaign allied to their only land neighbor, the Hirado. Hirado can be an effective buffer against enemies in the early game, but it owns a highly valuable province, so letting it be destroyed by its enemies and then conquering its former lands is highly beneficial. In the meantime, the Saga can conquer the smaller islands near it.

The Saga begin the campaign with a slightly stronger than average navy, which is useful for protecting its valuable port as well as for ferrying troops conquering the neighboring islands.
