Biography[]

Very little is known about Shamoke, mostly due to a lack of records from the Nanman people. Nothing is known about his early life, or when he came to power. He eventually managed to conquer some nearby tribes but never achieved his dream of reforming the Nanman kingdom.

Finally, the first detailed records about Shamoke appear in 221. Liu Bei had just declared war on his former ally, Sun Quan, breaking the alliance of the two against Cao Cao. Liu failed to gain much ground though and the campaign quickly bogged down into a months-long stalemate. Desperate to cause a breakthrough, Liu Bei turned to the semi-independent Nanman tribes on both his and Sun Quan's border.

Eventually, Shamoke, along with a large amount of weaker tribal chieftains were bribed or convinced to join him in his war against Sun Quan. Shamoke and his allied tribes indeed came as a surprise to general Lu Xun — who was in charge of the army opposing Bei — when they joined the Battle of Xiaoting, but it was not enough to break the stalemate. Shamoke is credited with killing Gan Ning, one of Sun Quan's generals, by shooting him directly in the head with an arrow from across the battlefield, causing the troops under Gan Ning to fall into disarray.

Liu Bei was convinced of his imminent victory, but there was one flaw in his plan. His war camps were spread out far too wide from each other and many were located in rough terrain that was difficult to traverse. In a brilliant move by general Lu Xun, he gathered the remaining strength of Sun Quan's armies and launched an unexpected counter-offensive, targeting the isolated and immobile camps. Liu Bei's army broke quickly, and he was forced to order a mass retreat. Shamoke would lose his life in the fighting along with many of his tribal warriors.
