For the skill system unique to Nanman characters, see Nanman Skill (Total War: Three Kingdoms)
Skills are a character-related feature in Total War: Three Kingdoms, allowing for a wide variety of buffs and new abilities.
Overview[]
Characters can level up through a variety of ways during the campaign, from fighting on the battlefield, holding a court or administrator position, completing assignments, or from other faction-wide bonuses. Each time a character levels up, they gain one skill point, which can be assigned in the skill panel of that character's menu.
Each character has a skill tree of fifteen slots, though it is impossible for a max-level character to unlock every single skill, with twelve skill points being the maximum attainable on a single character. As such, each character has to be levelled up on a case-to-case basis, as certain skills cater to certain playstyles. For example, some boost combat stats for generals, retinues and armies, whereas others provide bonuses to administrators or court nobles.
Please note that Nanman characters, added in The Furious Wild, use an entirely different skill system and are not included on this page.
Gameplay[]
Gaining Experience and Skill Points[]
Main Article: Characters (Total War: Three Kingdoms)
Each character in Total War: Three Kingdoms has a level, ranging from a minimum of one to a maximum of ten. To level up, they must gain experience, which can be done through a variety of ways, ranging from fighting in battles, holding court positions or becoming administrators, or carrying out assignments. Once a character has enough experience, they advance in level and unlock one skill point. A character can gain up to twelve skill points throughout their lifetime, which is not enough to unlock every single skill in their tree. Once a character can unlock a new skill, a purple bubble will hover next to their name on the sidebar indicating they have unspent skill points.
Characters with certain traits or backgrounds can receive extra experience. Faction leaders gain a small amount of bonus experience when a character in their faction levels up. If the campaign is played on Romance mode, characters that reach level four gain one extra resilience, allowing them to survive battles they would have otherwise died in.
Skill Trees[]
Skill Trees differ depending on the character. Each hero class has a generic skill tree, though many unique characters, such as Cao Cao or Lü Bu, have their own modified skill trees and sometimes skills entirely unique to them. Skill Trees can provide a wide variety of bonuses to characters both on and off the battlefield, and it is entirely up to the player how they wish to develop their characters. Furthermore, each skill provides a bonus to certain attributes which makes unlocking Skill Trees one of the best ways to turn a regular character into a legendary character.
Enabling Abilities[]
Main Article: Ability (Total War: Three Kingdoms)
Certain skills provide access to abilities in battle, enhancing the combat capabilities of a general, their troops, and sometimes the entire army. Besides proper abilities, generals can also unlock passive abilities/effects, for example Scare or Resistant to Fatigue, through their respective skill trees. Each character has three major ability skills located at the centre of the leftmost, middle, and rightmost branches of their skill tree, with some of the others primarily unlocking passive abilities.
Numbering Skill Trees[]
While an arbitrary decision, the general standard on this wiki is to read skill trees from top to bottom, left to right. Attached to this paragraph is an image displaying what this looks like. This will be useful to keep in mind, as most skills down below will be numbered according to the way of reading this skill tree. For example, the three aforementioned ability skills at the centre of the leftmost, middle, and rightmost branches correspond to numbers 2, 8, and 14.
