Biography[]
Song Dian was a eunuch and member of the Ten Attendants during the reign of Emperor Ling of Han. He was especially prevalent in the 180s when he was granted the title of marquis. In 185 AD, he was put in charge of the reconstruction and renovation of numerous palaces in Luoyang, particularly the Southern Palace, which had largely burnt down. Together with other Attendants, Song Dian used the opportunity to embezzle as much money for himself as he could, with manors and mansions for the Attendants being funded with money meant for materials.
In 189 AD, not long after the death of Emperor Ling, the Ten Attendants were increasingly sidelined by Empress Dowager He and her half-brother, General-in-Chief He Jin. He Jin began purging the imperial court of the eunuchs' influence, and one particular eunuch, Jian Shi, plotted to have He Jin assassinated. Jian Shi and He Jin were old enemies who had clashed in the past, and Song Dian may have had an involvement in the plot. The plot ultimately failed, and Jian Shi was executed. Since Song Dian's membership in the plot is unknown, he could have been among the co-conspirators who were also executed. If not, he almost certainly died later in the same year after another eunuch plot did successfully kill He Jin, which resulted in a retaliation attack by Yuan Shao, who stormed the palaces of Luoyang and slaughtered every eunuch he could get his hands on.
