The South Great Mountain in Three Kingdoms

The South Great Mountain, commonly known as Hengshan Mountain or Mount Heng, is a location in Total War: Three Kingdoms. It is a point of interest in southern China, located in Changsha commandery.

Description[]

Balancing Mountain, one of China's five most sacred, receives regular imperial homage.

Historical Context[]

The South Great Mountain is one of the Five Great Mountains of China, sacred to Buddhists, Taoists, and Confucianists. Confusingly, both the Northern and Southern Mountains are called Mount Heng. To tell them apart, the southern one is often called Mount Hengshan, whereas the northern one is simply called Mount Heng. At the foot of Mount Hengshan stands its associated Grand Temple, the largest complex of ancient buildings in Hunan province.

While the name would suggest that Mount Hengshan is one mountain, it is actually a small mountain range with 72 peaks. The tallest of these is Mount Zhurong, named after the traditional Chinese fire god. It remains an important religious site, with various temples spread across the area. Besides pilgrims, it is also a popular tourist spot for hikers and sightseers. Mount Hengshan is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical and religious significance.
