South Shinano is a province in Total War: Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai, and Fall of the Samurai.

Description[]

Located in the centre of the "Japanese Alps," the Shinano province is as mountainous as might be expected. It is therefore difficult to farm. In all of Japan, it is the province furthest from the sea in all directions. Stone is extensively quarried. Today, Shinano province is better known as Nagano prefecture, the host area of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games.

Total War: Shogun 2[]

  • Clan: Kiso Clan
  • Port: None
  • Fertility: Meagre
  • Resource/Specialty: Stone

South Shinano is an average province in terms of wealth, but provides the useful stone resource. It is the closest province with stone to a majority of factions in the game. South Shinano is closest to the Oda Clan, Tokugawa Clan and Takeda Clan, though given stone's relative cheapness and the lateness with which stone becomes a useful construction material, South Shinano is less valuable initially than other nearby provinces.

South Shinano borders Hida to the north, North Shinano to the northeast, Kai to the east, Suruga to the southeast, Totomi to the south, Mikawa to the southwest, and Mino to the west; however, due to the numerous mountains surrounding it, South Shinano has direct access only to Mino and North Shinano.

Rise of the Samurai[]

  • Clan: Kiso Minamoto (Minamoto)
  • Port: None
  • Fertility: Meagre
  • Resource/Specialty: None

South Shinano does not have any specialty or resource, nor does it have particularly good soil, making it a relatively poor province. Nevertheless, it is an important initial province for the playable Kiso Minamoto, as it begins the campaign with some training facilities.

Fall of the Samurai[]

  • Clan: Matsumoto (Imperial)
  • Port: None
  • Fertility: Meagre
  • Resource/Specialty: Tea

South Shinano has the valuable tea resource. It is the easternmost province to have tea, and is the closest tea province to the Jozai, Nagaoka, Aizu and Sendai factions. South Shinano is more accessible to its neighbours than its Shogun 2 and Rise of the Samurai counterparts, and is no longer barred by mountains from Totomi.
