Spain is a playable faction in Total War: Rome Remastered.

Introduction[]

For centuries, the Iberian peninsula has witnessed battles between the Iberi, Celtae and Celtiberi. Now, with both Carthage and Rome mounting campaigns in the region, violent clashes are imminent, and the tribes need to put aside their differences to form a united front. If they see off the invaders, there may be opportunities to expand into the wider Mediterranean.

Among the Iberian troops, none are more feared than the Bull Warriors - heavily armoured javelin-wielding shock troops.

General Information[]

Spain starts off with 4 towns and is stuck between Carthage and Gaul. Luckily two of the cities have mines so your economy is pretty good. However, Spain suffers in the early game due to having poor early game units. Couple this with the fact that the AI is very aggressive and Gaul is very likely to attack you within 20 turns. Sending waves of Levy Spearmen after you constantly.

Unfortunely you can't expect the Romans to help take pressure off you as they are also more likely to attack you than fight Gaul due to the AI focusing on the player. If you're not fast you'll be stuck facing stacks from Gaul, Rome and Carthage. Because of this it's advised to gain control of the entirety of Spain as fast as possible. Luckily your Iberian infantry do well enough against Gaul's spearmen due to the game making spearmen weaker against swordmen.

You'll be wanting to get your towns upgraded as soon as possible to produce Naked Fanatic, Scutarii, and Bull Warriors. Luckily Naked Fanatics can be built the moment you get lvl 2 building for the shrine of Esus. The moment you're able to build Bull Warriors you should spam them. You might employ some town watch as an expendable spear unit to eat charges from enemy cav but your Bull Warriors will be your go to unit for literally everything. As they are the only unit capable of standing up to Gaul's Chosen Warriors and Rome's Urban Cohorts.

After gaining control of Spain you can decide to keep pushing north into Gaul, east towards Rome, or south in Northern Africa. Be wary of the south later in the game as the House of Scipii tend to take over Africa and will try to send ships to invade. If you are lucky and the ai of Gaul and Rome actually decide to be at war with each other you can try to at least have a ceasefire with one of them to focus on a particular enemy.

Trivia[]

  • In the Spanish translation of RTW, they are more accurately called "Hispania", which, like Gaul/Gallia and Britannia, is the Roman name of the region.
