For other uses of the term, see Star Fort.

The Star Fort is a type of castle chain building in Fall of the Samurai.
Description[]
Buried in the earth, and surrounded by death.
A modern star fort does not look all that intimidating to civilian eyes, but on closer inspection its firepower is enough to induce fear and a healthy respect for authority. Given such a concrete example of government power, the people of a province with one are right to feel more than a little repressed. A star fort also acts as a recruiting centre for the army. Star forts were a European design intended to counter increasingly powerful siege artillery. Seen from above, they really are star-shaped. Essentially, the design was a fortress was sunk into the ground, presenting a low silhouette, with a surrounding glacis, or slope, to deflect shots over the top of the fortifications. The slope might seem an easy approach for attacking infantry, but a ring of projecting points allowed the defenders to fire along the length of the walls. Any defenders who reached the top of the glacis then had to cross a deep dry moat, all the while under heavy fire. A star fort was intended as a killing ground, pure and simple.

Star Forts are the last upgrade for the castle chain of buildings, granting the largest increase of repression possible. This makes them perfect for building in regions with high unrest, though the cost may be prohibitive to all but the richest factions. Star forts can save money for regions that are under constant threat of bombardments, which inflict damage that is expensive to repair. Finally, star forts provide strong protection for defenders against invading armies. Star forts are very difficult to build, requiring an exorbitant amount of money, a long build time, and an end-game military technology. The increase to repression is not worth the cost in practically any situation: building star forts have the worst cost to repression increase ratio of any building in the game.
In battle, star forts are usually highly similar to their predecessors. However, cannons are now built into the corners of the outermost walls. While these cannons fire only round shot, they can disrupt invader formations and slow their assault from sheer weight of fire alone. Star forts with even a modest garrison can fend off full armies of invaders, and star forts manned by large armies are practically impregnable. This forces attackers to siege out defenders, or hope that auto-resolve ends up being generous.
Given the end-game development level this building requires, the increase to modernisation is meaningless. Star forts, along with all castle line buildings, cannot be demolished. However, they may still be damaged through sabotage or raids. They are considered military buildings, and therefore benefit from events that reduce the construction times and costs of upgrading them.
Trivia[]
- In reality there was only one star fort in Japan, the Goryōkaku which was the site of the last battle of the Boshin War.
