Subcultures are hidden gameplay mechanics in Total War: Three Kingdoms.

Overview[]

Factions are categorized based on subcultures, with factions inside the subcultures sharing similar units, tech trees. For example, Cao Cao and Yuan Shao are both Han dynasty subculture due to them being warlords and governers of the Han Empire and Han Sui and Ma Teng are both part of the Qiang subculture, due to them originating among the tribes in the north.

There are variants inside subculture as well. For examples, Governor factions inside Han dynasty subculture all have loyal to the Han faction specialisation, which changes their campaign objectives. These difference are recorded in hidden parameters such as faction group and military group.

Subcultures are sub-divison of Culture categories. In Three Kingdoms, almost all subcultures are part of the Han Chinese culture with the exception of the Nanman, whom has no culture parameter assigned in the game database.
