Biography[]

Sun Shao was born in Beihai commandery in 163. He became an official for the province under Kong Rong somewhere in the early 190s, who was very impressed at Shao's abilities, stating that he could serve the imperial court if he wanted to. Still, Kong Rong's position was an unstable one, and as his territory stood on the brink of collapse at the hands of Yuan Shao and Yuan Tan, he left the area in either 195 or 196.

He traveled across China for years until eventually being recruited by Sun Quan in 200. It should be noted that Sun Shao and Sun Quan are no family of each other; they simply share the same family name. Sun Quan relied a lot on Shao's advice, as he found the man to be both wise and unquestionably loyal. As a result, Sun Shao was appointed as the administrator of Lujiang commandery.

After serving Sun Quan for twenty years, the Han dynasty was formally abolished by Cao Pi. Sun Quan later declared himself the King of Wu in 222, cutting ties with Wei, and appointing Sun Shao as the Imperial Chancellor of his kingdom. Kong Rong's advice of serving at the imperial court came true, as Shao became one of the most powerful men in Wu. Despite attempted slander by power-hungry nobles, Shao continued to serve Quan with complete loyalty until his death in mid-225.
