Boshin military suppression fire

Suppression Fire is a military technology in Fall of the Samurai.

Description[]

Bullets fill the air,

No man can struggle forward:

Retreat or die.

If a man spends his time in battle cowering in a ditch, behind a wall, or the dead bodies of his comrades, he might as well have stayed at home. He cannot do his duty; he cannot kill his enemy. Therefore, firing at the enemy is virtuous, even if they are not killed. Their worth as soldiers will die, even as they live.

General Information[]

Requires Level 4 clan development, Kneel Fire, 8 turns.

  • Enables the "Suppression Fire" ability

In contrast to Kneel Fire, which is a toggled ability with infinite duration, suppression fire is a temporarily activated ability. It can be used simultaneously with kneel fire. Suppression fire increases the fire rate line infantry and light infantry, and the volleys gain the bonus effect of slowing the movement speed of enemies they hit, as well as decreasing their morale. However, infantry who use this ability suffer a penalty to their accuracy as a result, and light infantry who use suppression fire suffer a minor reduction to range, as well. In total, suppression fire grants +20 reload skill but -20 accuracy while it is active. This is significant in the early game, where troops are inexperienced enough and rifles are old enough for such stat changes to make a difference. However, Suppression Fire is only available in the late game, where most modern troops fire and reload so quickly that changes to either reloading or accuracy statistics don't make a significant difference in their performance.

Much like Whistling Arrows from Total War: Shogun 2 and Rise of the Samurai, suppression fire affects any unit that it passes over or goes through, be they friend or foe. A single regiment can theoretically suppress dozens of enemy regiments if they are bunched up enough or marching in a column. At the same time, suppression fire can be dangerous to use near friendly units that have already shaky morale or need to move quickly.

Suppression fire can be useful when fighting melee or close range troops, as line infantry are almost uniformly weak to melee combat and benefit from staying out of it for as long as possible. In situations where an inferior number of line infantry are fighting against numerically superior melee troops, a combination of regiments using suppression fire and kneel fire could both slow down enemy regiments and inflict heavy casualties on them.
