The Swiss Confederation is a minor faction in Napoleon: Total War.

Tutorial[]

The Swiss Confederation appears in the tutorial as a faction that's friendly to France. Napoleon passes through it on his way to Paris. Its role in the tutorial is very minimal.

Europe Campaign[]

Basics at start[]

The Swiss Confederation borders France to the west, French-held Alsace-Lorraine to the north, Baden-Württemberg to the north-east, Austrian-held Tyrol to the west, the Kingdom of Italy to the south, and French-held Nice to the south-west. It is allied to France and her allies, and at war with the coalition. It is fairly aggressive for a minor faction, often sending forces to attack neighboring Austria, and is an effective buffer state for France.

France can only recruit its Swiss Foot from Switzerland's home region, which means that it must either betray its Swiss ally or wait for another faction to destroy it in order for it to obtain these units. Switzerland, with its uncommon lumber camp and useful supply post, is a good candidate for annexation for any faction.

Should the Swiss Confederation be destroyed, it can emerge if its home region of Switzerland has a successful rebellion or is liberated.

Diplomacy[]

Switzerland Diplomacy Map NTW

Initial diplomacy map

Like several of France's allies, the Swiss Confederation initially has a high level of historical friendship with most of France's enemies, as well as historical grievances with France. This, coupled with the diplomatic bonuses and penalties applied to alliances and declared wars respectively, means that Switzerland initially has a more or less neutral opinion of most other factions. The major exception lies in Austria, which is highly hostile with it.

Below are a list of grievances/friendships other factions have with the Swiss Confederation initially. This list is exhaustive; factions that are not listed do not have friendships or grievances (they are neutral).

Military[]

Switzerland has an unusually small unit roster, even for a minor faction. It lacks any lancer cavalry, light cavalry, light infantry, grenadiers, or skirmishers. It can only field two types of artillery, the 6-lber Foot Artillery and the 6-lber Horse Artillery.

Switzerland's ship roster is over twice as large as all its land units combined, and is about average for a minor faction. Switzerland can't immediately take advantage of it, though, due to its landlocked state.
