"The Thracian's bloodthirsty reputation is well deserved."
Called by the Roman historian Livy, along with the Gauls, “…the most warlike of all nations”, the Thracians were renowned warriors whose prowess in battle made them much sought after as mercenaries. As skilled horsemen and infantry who excelled in light tactics, Thracians provided up to one third of the cavalry in the Macedonian army and a fifth of its infantry. In the Imperial age, Thracians were one of the largest auxiliary groups within the Roman army, contributing some 20,000 troops. As well as being famed for their prowess in battle, they also bore a reputation for joy in plunder and a vicious disregard for captives.
