Biography[]

He was either from Julu Commandery or Bohai. He was orphaned early and lived a rather unhapply life, because losing your parents is probably a good cause for depression. He was known for being well-read, knowledgeable and intelligent. He started his career under Emperor Ling's reign, becoming an Imperial Clerk before resigning due to the growing power of the eunuchs, which disgusted him.

When Yuan Shao joined a coalition against Dong Zhuo, realizing Tian Feng's talent, he invited him with expensive gifts and sincere letters, completely opposite of what would happen later on. Tian Feng accepted the invitation because he saw it as an opportunity for him to serve the Han Empire and save it from collapse.

His service under Yuan Shao can be summarized as this: Whatever he suggested, Yuan Shao disagreed. At one point, Tian Feng was angered that Yuan Shao didn't use a perfectly good chance of "Cao Cao being busy, attacking Liu Bei" to launch a surprise attack because of Yuan Shao's son was sick:"What a pity that he let a rare opportunity slip by just because of a child's illness!", he said angrily while hitting the ground with his staff. Later that year, Tian Feng advised a long-term strategy against Cao Cao before the Battle of Guandu, but Yuan Shao, believing Tian Feng was harming morale after disagreeing yet he kept pushing his deas (or he had enough of Tian Feng's advises), imprisoned him.

After Yuan Shao's defeat at the Battle of Guandu, Tian Feng declared his fate tied to the army's outcome:"If our army won the battle, I will survive; if they lost, I will die.". However, due to Pang Ji, another Yuan Shao's advisor who is on bad terms with Tian Feng, falsely claimed that Tian Feng rejoiced at their loss, Yuan Shao, enraged, ordered Tian Feng's execution which was opposite when Yuan Shao tried to invite him. At least his divination on his fate was true, as Yuan Shao did lose and Tian Feng did die.
