The sling is a simple easily-made weapon and is thus in widespread use amongst the less civilized barbarian peoples on the borders of Greece and Persia. With a strip of leather, a handle of stones and some practice a man can learn to drive predators away from the herd, bring down large prey animals or even another man. Armed with slings, even youths can play a part in battle when enemies threaten, and barbarian armies usually include swarms of such irregular troops. When time allows for preparation, slingers carry a bag of baked clay ammunition, or even moulded lead balls, but when this has been expended, all they need do is cast about on the ground for suitable pebbles. For this reason, slingers tend to maintain their barrage for far longer in battle than javelinmen or even archers. Though they rely on speed for the greater part of their personal defence, each man also carries a small target shield into battle along with a large knife to cut the throats of their stunned victims!
