Vanguard is one of the five default hero class in Total War: Three Kingdoms. Vanguards are the unit killers, and they're great at cutting their way through tons of common soldiers.
Description[]
These fiery warriors excel at punching through troop lines and therefore work well when grouped with melee and polearm cavalry. They are less well-suited to dueling, and Instinct is their key attribute, improving their melee damage and reducing recruitment costs for their army. The Instinct-based Vanguard skills in their skills-tree debuff enemy morale, improve their melee damage and confer a powerful splash-damage attack.
Overview[]
- Main article: Hero (Total War: Three Kingdoms)
The vanguard excels at shock battle tactics with rapid cavalry charges that can devastate an enemy's flank and can recruit units to an army with greater efficiency, saving vital funds.
General Information[]
- Wu Xing: Fire
- Specialized Attributes: Instinct
Vanguards are excellent for destroying enemy retinues, thanks to their special skills dealing area of effect damage. They are less suited to fighting enemy sentinels and champions, though they can still take out most strategists and commanders fairly easily.
Generic vanguards have the Roar of the Beast, Final Rush, and Flames of the Phoenix abilities. Roar of the Beast is an activated skill that temporarily decreases the morale of all nearby enemy units, potentially causing enemy units to rout. Final Rush is a passive buff that greatly increases the movement speed and charge of the vanguard, but only when he is at half health or less. Flames of the Phoenix is a powerful activated area-of-effect damaging ability, allowing vanguards to wipe out dozens of men in an instant, particularly if they are bunched up around him. Unique vanguards may have one (or more) of these skills replaced by other skills.
Vanguards are not particularly useful for being administrators, assignments, or prime ministers/heirs/faction leaders. They have few faction-wide buffs, and the assignments they have usually have to do with decreasing mustering time or recruitment costs--short term benefits at best--along with increasing replenishment rates, which is probably the only useful assignment that they can use. Assigning them doing these in a recently-captured settlement or frontline settlements can ensure that one's armies are always ready for the next fight.
All generic and semi-unique vanguards are male. In the base game, the only vanguards that are female are Sun Ren and Empress He; the latter is a court character that cannot be deployed on the battlefield without mods.
