Biography[]

Wang Lang was born in Donghai as Wang Yan, but he changed his name at some point. He was a well-regarded scholar with many literary works, earning him the title of gentleman and county magistrate. In time, Wang Lang became an administrative officer under Tao Qian. When Tao Qian was appointed governor, he made Wang Lang administrator of Kuaiji commandery, a post he held onto after Tao Qian's death.

In 196, Kuaiji commandery was invaded by Sun Ce. Wang Lang's smaller army took a defensive position along the Zhe River but was ultimately defeated. Wang Lang got on a ship and fled north but was pursued and captured by Sun Ce's forces, who forced him to surrender. Sun Ce was well aware of Wang Lang's talents and offered him a position, though he unsurprisingly refused. In 198, he moved to the court of Cao Cao at Xuchang, where he entered the warlord's military staff.

In 213, Wang Lang was appointed as the administrator of Wei commandery by Cao Cao. Wang Lang mingled much with the puppet Han court under Emperor Xian, whose authority was symbolic at best at this point in time. The Emperor appointed him as a minister not long before Cao Cao's death in 220. Cao Pi, his son and successor, abolished the Han Empire and crowned himself Emperor of Wei. While Wang Lang lost his status with the old imperial court, he remained in the good graces of Cao Pi's new empire and was granted the rank of Excellency.

Throughout Cao Pi's campaigns against Sun Quan and the Kingdom of Wu, the Emperor often called on Wang Lang for military advice. He was a native of the area and knew the land well from when he was the administrator of Kuaiji. He continued a similar service under Cao Pi's successor, Cao Rui, until his death in 227.
