Biography[]

A bit of a footnote -- and an odd one at that -- Wang Lei was a bureaucrat serving the Governor of Yi Province, Liu Zhang. Liu Zhang's reign was marked by rebellion from his late father's more warlike officers caused by his pacifist nature. His inability to effectively deal with these rebellions led to a clique of advisors with secret loyalties to Liu Bei advising Zhang to invite Bei to Yi province and restore order. Wang Lei, an Attendant Officer at the time, thought this idea was so terrible that he hung himself upside down from a gate in protest. Whatever he was trying to achieve failed, as Liu Zhang would nevertheless go on to invite Liu Bei and his forces to Yi Province, who would proceed to oust him. Besides his unorthodox protest, not much else is known about Wang Lei.
