Biography[]

Wang Xiu first appears under Kong Rong from a young age. Here, he served as a low-ranking official under the governor, but Xiu would soon catch the attention of Kong Rong. He gained a reputation for being incorruptible and extremely efficient at his work. As a result, he was quickly given a much higher rank.

With the collapse of the Han Dynasty, bandits started appearing all over China, and Kong Rong's territory was no exception. Nonetheless, Wang Xiu became famed for his ability to wipe out bandit gangs by killing their leaders and then making the regular members scatter. As a result, Kong Rong often relied on Xiu's advice on banditry and warfare.

Kong Rong would eventually be defeated by Yuan Shao and Yuan Tan, however, fleeing to the court of Cao Cao. This left Wang Xiu at the mercy of Yuan Tan. Fortunately, Tan had heard of Xiu's exploits and was impressed, choosing to employ him. Wang Xiu spend the next years serving Tan with absolute loyalty,

After a short civil war between Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang, fighting over their late father's territory, Yuan Tan found himself captured. Wang Xiu, alongside a small group of soldiers, freed the warlord. Xiu pleaded for Tan to sign a truce with his brother, but he refused. The war would go on for a short while before Yuan Tan was captured by Cao Cao's armies.

Xiu gathered a small army to free Tan once more, but the warlord had already been executed when they got there. Xiu then handed himself over to Cao Cao alongside what remained of Yuan Tan's forces, begging for his body so he could be given a proper burial. Yet, Cao Cao had heard stories about Xiu and decided to pardon him and the men he was leading.

Xiu spent the rest of his life serving under Cao Cao. He would climb the bureaucratic ladder to become one of the most influential ministers in Wei, all while protecting Cao Cao from plots and rebellions the whole time. The exact date or cause of his death is unknown, but he is last mentioned in 216, so it was most likely in late 216 or 217.
