Overview[]
Like his cousin, one of Xiahou Yuan's best early game advantages is the fact that his personal armor reduces his retinue's upkeep by 15%, allowing his faction to field a larger army. His stats are much higher than generic vanguards, though much of the allocation of the points is wasted on Cunning, which vanguards have little use for.
On the battlefield, Xiahou Yuan lacks access to the Roar of the Beast ability, meaning he doesn't have any way to debuff enemy morale. Instead, he gains the Blazing Saddles ability, temporarily dramatically increasing his speed, charge bonus, and charging speed. However, Blazing Saddles massively decreases Xiahou Yuan's stamina, meaning that using this ability rapidly slows him down and worsens his melee capabilities. Blazing Saddles is a situational skill at best. It is best used in conjunction with Cao Cao's scheme, Hawk & Tiger Manoeuvres, which locks an army's fatigue level to winded or better. This allows Xiahou Yuan to use the ability without being penalized too much.
Biography[]
Born somewhere around 162, Xiahou Yuan is the younger cousin of the legendary Xiahou Dun and a far-flung cousin from Cao Cao. Little is known about his early life until an incident in 190. Supposedly, Cao Cao had committed some grave misdeed, and Xiahou Yuan took the blame for him, which marks the start of a bond between the two.
When Cao Cao joined the coalition against Dong Zhuo during the collapse of the Han Dynasty, Xiahou Yuan and Xiahou Dun both joined his army. He subsequently fought in many of Cao Cao's battles for the coming decade. After the defeat of Yuan Shao in 200, Xiahou Yuan was appointed as something akin to a quartermaster, providing Cao Cao's armies with all the supplies they needed.
In 206, Xiahou Yuan crushed the rebellion of a minor warlord called Chang Xi with such efficiency that it earned him the praise of Cao Cao and a promotion. Over the next few years, Yuan roamed around China with his army, winning various battles.
His luck would run out in 217, however. Liu Bei, a long-time enemy of Cao Cao, launched a large offensive around Hangzhong. Xiahou Yuan gathered his men around Yangping, which had been won by Cao Cao two years earlier. This area was a natural chokepoint, and Xiahou Yuan and Liu Bei were forced into a bloody stalemate that lasted for more than a year.
Eventually, one of Xiahou Yuan's commanders on his flanks, Zhang He, was defeated by Liu Bei, forcing Xiahou to split his forces in two. Subsequently, a gap opened up in his defence, and Liu Bei rushed his army into Yuan's camp. Despite putting up a desperate defence, Liu Bei killed Xiahou Yuan and most of his army.
