Biography[]

The younger of the "Two Qiaos of Jiangdong", Xiao Qiao (literally "younger Qiao") was born in Lujiang commandery alongside her older sister Da Qiao. Renowned for their beauty, they went on to marry prominent figures in Wu. Da Qiao married Sun Ce, while Xiao Qiao married his friend and general Zhou Yu. Nothing else is known about them.

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the Qiao Sisters play a much larger role. Cao Cao learns of the existence of the two beautiful sisters and sets out on a quest to take them as his concubines. When Zhou Yu learns of the warlord's ambition to steal his wife, he increases the pressure on Sun Quan to ally with Liu Bei against Cao Cao, leading to a series of events that resulted in the famous Battle of Red Cliffs in which Cao Cao was soundly defeated. The novel, therefore, twists the battle to be about love, yet this was simply not the case in reality. One way or another, the Qiao Sisters and their supposed role in the Battle of Red Cliffs became popularised through folk tales and Chinese opera for years to come and remain popular to this day.
