Biography[]

Little is known about Xu You's early life, but it is known he plotted to overthrow Emperor Ling during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. This plot failed, and he ended up fleeing east where he later ended up in service of Yuan Shao in 191. Under Yuan Shao, Xu You would serve as an advisor, however, his advice would often be disregarded or ignored by Shao, leading to You slowly being more disgruntled.

Around 200, during Yuan Shao's war against Cao Cao's Duchy of Wei, one of Yuan Shao's generals, Shen Pei, had Xu You's family arrested for the widespread corruption that Xu You was involved in. When word reached Yuan Shao, he sided with Pei, heavily berating Xu You. Fearing for his life, Xu You abandoned Yuan Shao and defected to Cao Cao who was a childhood friend of his. Xu You pointed Cao Cao at supply targets behind Yuan Shao's lines, which contributed somewhat to Cao Cao's victory at the decisive Battle of Guandu.

However, over the years, Xu You would massively exaggerate his role in the Battle of Guandu, stating that the only reason Cao Cao won was because of him. Cao Cao bore the disrespect and arrogance coming from Xu You for some time, until he finally snapped in late 204, having Xu You arrested and later executed for his arrogance, disrespect, and continued corruption.
