Biography[]

Xun Yu was born in 163 in Yingchuan to a family of Han ministers, as both his father and grandfather had served as ministers. He possessed a natural talent for administration and was often praised by his peers when he was young. Subsequently, Yu gained the position of Prefect of the Imperial Guards in Luoyang in 189. However, when the Han Dynasty began its collapse and Dong Zhuo took over, he quickly requested to be assigned somewhere else, preferably as far away from Dong Zhuo as possible. He got his wish and became the Prefect of the town of Kangfu but soon resigned to return to his native Yingchuan.

Thanks to the chaos in China at the time, Yingchuan was a starving commandery with many ruined villages. He tried to convince the inhabitants of his hometown to come with him and his family far away from the chaos. The townsfolk refused, and Xun Yu's family set out alone, reaching the court of Yuan Shao in 190, who welcomed Xun Yu as an advisor. In time, Xun would be proven right when Dong Zhuo's men pillaged Yingchuan further, killing many civilians and burning down large parts of his hometown. At Yuan Shao's court, Xun Yu was unimpressed with his new lord, stating that he could never achieve greatness. He took his family once more and defected south to the lands of Cao Cao, who was delighted to have the man's service. Recognizing his talent, Cao Cao said: "Here comes my Zifang!". Zifang, or Zhang Liang, was one of the most crucial court members of the early Han dynasty, laying the foundations for the empire along with Han Xin and Xiao He.

Xun Yu served as an advisor to Cao Cao, who valued his opinion greatly. Often he was the voice of wisdom, restraining Cao Cao and his hot-headed generals time and time again. He continued to serve Cao Cao until 212, when the warlord's ambitions had become too much for Xun Yu. Around this time, many of Cao Cao's followers wanted to officially make him a duke, which would significantly increase his power. Xun Yu's loyalties lay with the puppet Han court, and he wanted Cao Cao to uphold Emperor Xian's reign and bring back stability to China. Needless to say, he was a very vocal opponent to Cao Cao's ascension to a duke.

Cao Cao did not punish Xun Yu for speaking out against him, but later that year, Xun Yu mysteriously and very suddenly contracted a disease that killed him. Cao Cao became the Duke of Wei a year later. Whether if the timing was a mere coincidence or if Xun Yu was poisoned by Cao Cao's loyalists remains disputed.
