For the character, see Yan Baihu

Yan Baihu is a playable faction in Total War: Three Kingdoms, added by a DLC bearing the same name. It starts the campaign in southern China, located in Xindu commandery. The faction appears in 190 and 194. Gaining a rank as a duke, king, or emperor renames the faction to Eastern Wu.

Yan Baihu is considered a bandit faction, having access to bandit units and buildings, as well as to the bandit network as opposed to the regular reforms tree.

White Tiger Confederation[]

The White Tiger Confederation is unique in that it is simultaneously Yan Baihu's faction resource and its own separate mechanic. It is gained by entering into a coalition or alliance with other factions. Note that only independent allies count and that vassals of Yan Baihu will not count towards the White Tiger Confederation. Bonuses go into effect once Yan Baihu allies with one faction and reach their maximum power once he has eight allies.

The White Tiger Confederation grants Yan Baihu bonuses towards the speed at which he can expand his bandit network. It also decreases recruitment costs for non-bandit units. All this provided Yan Baihu with a unique playstyle where, despite being a bandit faction, he is heavily focused towards building a vast network of allies instead of ruthlessly conquering anything in his path like Zheng Jiang.

The five tiers of the White Tiger Confederation are as follows:

White Tiger Confederation (0 Allies)

  • No effect

White Tiger Yan understands that by standing side-by-side, the disenfranchised and the downtrodden can overcome even the greatest of adversity.

White Tiger Bond (1-2 Allies)

  • -3% cost of establishing Outlaws & Outcasts connections
  • -4% cost of establishing Clandestine & Corrupt connections
  • -2% cost of establishing Faith & Folly connections
  • -5% cost of establishing Tribes & Tradition connections
  • -4% recruitment cost for all non-bandit units

Two kindred tigers crouch in wait; two ardent spirits bound by fate.

White Tiger Accord (3-4 Allies)

  • -6% cost of establishing Outlaws & Outcasts connections
  • -8% cost of establishing Clandestine & Corrupt connections
  • -4% cost of establishing Faith & Folly connections
  • -10% cost of establishing Tribes & Tradition connections
  • -8% recruitment cost for all non-bandit units

Tiger, tiger, brave and bold; steer more tigers to the fold.

White Tiger Union (5-7 Allies)

  • -9% cost of establishing Outlaws & Outcasts connections
  • -12% cost of establishing Clandestine & Corrupt connections
  • -6% cost of establishing Faith & Folly connections
  • -15% cost of establishing Tribes & Tradition connections
  • -12% recruitment cost for all non-bandit units

Fiery, the tigers rise; their tunders roar o'er mountain skies.

White Tiger Empire (8 Allies)

  • -15% cost of establishing Outlaws & Outcasts connections
  • -20% cost of establishing Clandestine & Corrupt connections
  • -10% cost of establishing Faith & Folly connections
  • -25% cost of establishing Tribes & Tradition connections
  • -20% recruitment cost for all non-bandit units

A mountain may befit one tiger; to sate the many, one needs an empire.

Note: In-game it incorrectly states that the cost of establishing bandit networks goes up per tier, which is not the case.

Mercenary Treaties[]

TW3K Mercenary Contract

Zheng Jiang becoming a mercenary for Cao Cao

Mercenary treaties are a diplomatic option available to bandits, including Yan Baihu. One can't be too picky in times of war, and Yan Baihu plays into this, having the ability to sell his faction to the highest bidder. Upon a foreign warlord accepting a mercenary treaty, Yan Baihu will join the selected war. he will only join that war, and if a Warlord is involved in multiple conflicts at the same time, he will only fight on the side of the war for which he was paid.

TW3K Mercenary Mission

The associated mission to attack Dong Zhuo

Once a Mercenary Treaty is signed, Yan Baihu will declare war on the target and any vassals or allies involved in the ongoing conflict. He will gain military access and intel on the warlord paying for the mercenary treaty, granting the player full vision inside their borders and the line of sight of their deployed troops.

When Yan Baihu has accepted his contract, his employer will expect him to hold up his end of the bargain, and a 20-turn timer begins. A similar tiered modifier as Infamy appears called Fame & Fortune. Fame and fortune will start at the second tier, Unremarkable, and will rapidly decline by -4 per turn. If the modifier hits zero, the contract will be immediately abandoned. Yan Baihu will not receive the loot at the end of the 20 turns and will suffer a diplomatic penalty with the faction that hired him.

To raise Fame & Fortune, Yan Baihu must attack the target of his treaty. The more casualties he deals, the faster Fame & Fortune rises. Furthermore, when bound by a contract, Yan Baihu can gift captured settlements to the faction he is working for, which grants a significant bonus to the amount of Fame & Fortune he has. This is not required, however, and he can simply take the settlements for himself if he so desires.

The four tiers of Fame & Fortune are:

TW3K Mercenary Gift to Lord

Yan Baihu's option to hand over a captured settlement to his benefactor

Fame & Fortune: Despised (0-25)

  • No effects

There are those who doubt you are worth your coin – tread carefully, lest you find yourself out of work.

Fame & Fortune: Unremarkable (26-50)

  • Chance of additional rewards

You are yet to prove your worth. However, that can quickly change.

Fame & Fortune: Popular (51-75)

  • Chance of additional greater rewards
  • +4 morale (faction-wide)

The troops serving under you want for nothing, their wallets heavy and their morale high. You enjoy the benefits of your success.

Fame & Fortune: Celebrated

  • Chance of additional much greater rewards
  • +8 morale (faction-wide)

When your banners fly on the battlefield they inspire both pride and terror. Tribute flows to you from a grateful benefactor.

Starting Situation[]

TW3K Yan Baihu 190

190 - Yan Baihu (Lavender), Enemies (Red)

Rise of the Warlords (190)[]

Yan Baihu has spent his life building a home in the south; an existence he will now defend against invaders with steel and rage. As a supposed descendant of the Shanyue tribe, Yan Baihu has a vested interest in the life and freedom of the southlands. As others begin to look with greed upon his territory, he has resolved that he will take up arms against them all, using his network of bandits and outcasts to find his way to victory!

Start: Normal

Yan Baihu starts the campaign in Xindu commandery. He is at war with the Han Empire under Dong Zhuo, though his position is favourable. The isolated southern edges of the Han Empire are easy pickings, and Yan Baihu is in an ideal position to capitalise on it. He can rapidly expand westward and southward, capturing a large chunk of territory for himself. With his power base established, he can start building his White Tiger Confederation with other minor warlords nearby, such as Wang Lang, Sheng Xian, and, perhaps, Liu Yao.

A World Betrayed (194)[]

TW3K Yan Baihu 194

194 - Yan Baihu (Lavender), Yellow Turban Rebellion (Red)

Yan Baihu has spent his life building a home in the south; an existence he will now defend against invaders with steel and rage. As a supposed descendant of the Shanyue tribe, Yan Baihu has a vested interest in the life and freedom of the southlands. As Sun Ce and others begin to look with greed upon his territory, he has resolved that he will take up arms against them all, using his network of bandits and outcasts to find his way to victory!

Start: Easy

Yan Baihu starts the World Betrayed campaign in a slightly better position than in 190. His territory has grown a little, gaining one county. He is at war with the generic Yellow Turban Rebellion faction, which he heavily outnumbers. After defeating the Yellow Turbans, Baihu can snowball into southeastern China, where he can simply claim the abandoned lands by establishing order. From here, he can build his White Tiger Confederation with many small warlords in the area, both to the north and to the west of him. A long-term threat is Sun Ce, who will seek to invade the area, but Yan Baihu can stop him with relative ease if he grows his coalition and establishes order in his corner of China. If Sun Ce gets bogged down in a stalemate, his faction resource will eventually run out, resulting in his death.

Trivia[]

  • With four unique units available, Yan Baihu has the most unique units of any faction in Total War: Three Kingdoms.
