Biography[]

Born in Runan commandery, Ying Shao was the son of the notable Ying Feng. He was a scholar who was nominated as Filial & Incorrupt and subsequently became a clerk under He Miao, the brother of Empress He, the wife of Emperor Ling of Han. In 186, Ying Shao became a full-fledged magistrate. Three years later, he was appointed as the administrator of Taishan commandery.

After defeating a group of Yellow Turbans in 191, Ying Shao joined forces with Tao Qian in 192. The pair failed to mount an expedition against Dong Zhuo to free Emperor Xian, though their alliance remained intact. Two years later, Ying Shao was contracted by Cao Cao to escort his father, Cao Song, as he moved into Xu province to retire. However, controversially, Cao Song was killed by some troops with uncertain loyalties and Song's caravan of possessions was robbed. Cao Cao blamed Tao Qian for sending the troops while others believed these soldiers were rogues, as they split the loot and scattered in all directions after the robbery.

In either case, what resulted was one of the bloodiest wars of the period, with Cao Cao going out of his way to kill as many civilians as possible. Ying Shao was not around for it, however. Having failed to defend Cao Song as agreed, he hastily fled north to join Yuan Shao to avoid Cao Cao's wrath. In Yuan Shao's court, Ying Shao turned to his scholarly works, writing a vast collection of tomes before his death in 200. He left behind a legacy of important sources of information on the Later Han.

Ying Shao's depiction in Total War: Three Kingdoms is highly historically inaccurate, then. In the 182 campaign, he is the ruler of Lean (Taishan) commandery, a post he did not hold until 189. Then, in 190, he is the ruler of Yulin commandery in the far south of China while he most likely never set foot in the area, let alone rule over it as administrator.
