Yu Fan is a legendary Strategist hero in Total War: Three Kingdoms. He is a member of Wang Lang in 190 and 194, later joining Sun Ce in 200.
Biography[]
Born in Kuaiji (modern-day Yuyao, Zhejiang) and initially served as a minor officer under Wang Lang, the Administrator of Kuaiji Commandery, Yu Fan later joined the joined Sun Ce who highly regarded him, After Sun Ce's death, Yu Fan continued his service under Sun Ce's brother and successor, Sun Quan.
Yu Fan was known for his candid and outspoken nature, which often got him into trouble with Sun Quan He offended Sun Quan several times and did not get along well with many of his colleagues, even mocking enemy officials such as Yu Jin, who was held captive, wanting to hit him with his horsewhip at one point and insulting Mi Fang for failing his duties as a general, making Mi Fang feeling ashamed. Despite his blunt demeanor, he played a crucial role in the Jing Province campaign.
Unfortunately, his disrespectful behavior led to his banishment to Jiao Province in the 220s. During his exile, Yu Fan continued to lecture and write, remaining concerned about state affairs. Yu Fan spent more than a decade living in exile. During the exile, he surprisingly expressed remorse for his past mistakes and hinted that he hoped that Sun Quan would allow him to return to Jianye. He once advised Sun Quan against attacking the warlord Gongsun Yuan, but his advice was ignored. When the fleet suffered heavy losses, Sun Quan regretted his decision and tried to summon Yu Fan back, but Yu Fan had already passed away at the age of 70.
Sun Quan permitted Yu Fan's family to bring his remains back to Yuyao County for burial. He also freed them from exile.
