Biography[]

Yu Jin was born in Juping. He first appears in the records during the Yellow Turban Rebellion, where he was a regular soldier under Bao Xin. He would remain under Bao's command until he joined the coalition under Cao Cao. He was assigned to the forces of Wang Lang, who was extremely impressed by Yu Jin's tactical knowledge. As such, he recommended to Cao Cao that Yu Jin be made an officer. Cao Cao summoned Yu Jin and the two proceeded to have something akin to a second-century job interview, after which Yu Jin became an official commander for the warlord.

His early military campaign was mostly him following Cao Cao around in his campaigns against Tao Qian and later Lü Bu, alongside various groups of Yellow Turbans. While Yu Jin's victories were rather minor in importance, he consistently came out on top in battles. His rise to fame came in his battles against Zhang Chao. During the offensive, Yu Jin was ambushed by the forces of Yuan Shu, but, instead of being overwhelmed, the ambushed army fought back against all odds and managed to kill four of Yuan Shu's commanders in a seemingly impossible victory. As a result, Yu Jin rose to great prominence.

When Liu Bei attacked Cao Cao, it left Yu Jin all alone to defend against an invasion by Yuan Shao to the north. Despite being outnumbered, Yu Jin was able to hold the warlord off until reinforcements under Yue Jin arrived. Together, the two generals launched a bold counterattack that caused chaos in the camps of Yuan Shao and convinced some of his generals to surrender. For their victory, both men were promoted by Cao Cao, with Yu Jin obtaining the rank of Major General.

After putting down a rebellion around Tonghai, Yu Jin earned another promotion, becoming the General of Tiger's Might. Yu Jin was assigned to the southern front to aid Cao Ren, the cousin of Cao Cao, in his defence of the area. Cao Ren had been at the frontline of Cao Cao's war with Liu Bei, who had since overthrown Liu Zhang and taken over Yi Province. When he arrived, Yu Jin's army settled down comfortably in their camps, expecting very little fighting. It was autumn and with heavy rains and flooded lands, attacking now would be a logistical nightmare.

Seeing this as an opportunity, Guan Yu, a general loyal to Liu Bei, launched a surprise attack using boats to traverse the flooded land, catching both Yu Jin and Cao Ren completely off-guard. Cao Ren's forces were captured and he was forced to flee. Seeing this, Yu Jin simply surrendered while another general, Pang De, fought to the death. When news reached Cao Cao that Yu Jin had surrendered without a fight, he remarked that whilst Yu Jin was loyal, he was also a coward for surrendering and that he should have fought to the death like Pang De. Soon after, the alliance against Cao Cao between Liu Bei and Sun Quan broke down, leading to Guan Yu being attacked by the latter's forces. Yu Jin was freed and returned to the northern capital with his tail between his legs.

When Yu Jin reached the capital of Wei, he discovered that Cao Cao had died and had been replaced by his son, Cao Pi. When he was granted an audience with Cao Pi, the disgraced Yu Jin reportedly broke into tears. Cao Pi agreed that Yu Jin could serve him if he visited the mausoleum of Cao Cao and paid his respects. It is said that when Yu Jin visited the tomb of Cao Cao he came across a mural depicting the battle between Cao Ren and Guan Yu. The mural praised the bravery of Pang De and painted Yu Jin as a coward. Upon seeing the mural, Yu Jin was crushed and supposedly died of heartbreak soon after. It can be safely assumed that this event didn't happen, and is most likely a romanticisation. More like, Yu Jin just happened to die of old age or an unrelated disease at the time.
