Overview[]
Yuan Shang's terrible starting traits of Vain, Sickly and Greedy make him an excellent candidate for re-rolling traits with the faction council. As a member of the Yuan clan, his fighting ability is improved with his Familial Conflict skill if he has a family member on the battlefield. Other than that, his skill tree is generic.
Biography[]
Yuan Shang was the youngest son of Yuan Shao and the favoured of Yuan Shao's three sons thanks to his apparent beauty as a child. This resulted in the youngest son becoming Shao's heir, against common practice. When Yuan Shao died in 202 AD, Yuan Shang took over his position as Governor of Ji with the help of his former supporters. This was a difficult time, as Yuan Shao had previously been at war with Cao Cao's Duchy of Wei to the south, and Yuan Shang found himself at the helm of a losing war. Begrudgingly, Yuan Shang worked together with his older brother, Yuan Tan to fight against Cao Cao, yet still they were driven back. Then, all of a sudden, Cao Cao turned around and halted his invasion, puzzling some, yet his goal became clear quite quickly.
Instead of throwing away manpower and supplies on an invasion against a unified front of the Yuan clan, Cao Cao simply waited. This strategy proved very effective, as Yuan Shang and Yuan Tan, rivals since childhood, turned on each other for control soon after. The former territory of Yuan Shao became engulfed in civil war as both brothers depleted their manpower on fighting each other, while the threat that Wei posed to the south became a distant memory at best.
In 204, with Yuan Tan driven back into a fortified city which Yuan Shang had difficulty taking, he invited Cao Cao over for a "friendly invasion" of Yuan Tan's last holdings. Cao Cao happily agreed and took over the lands with relative ease. When Yuan Shang tried to make terms with Cao Cao, fishing for an alliance or perhaps an equal partnership, Cao Cao rejected flat-out. Soon after, Shang's army defected in droves and he was ousted from power, his territory being taken over by Wei forces without much of a fight. He abandoned what loyalists and family he had left and fled north to shelter with his other brother, Yuan Xi, who had remained as far from the conflict as possible. Yuan Tan, left to face Cao Cao alone, was crushed.
Driven increasingly further northeast, as Cao Cao pushed into Yuan Xi's territory, the two brothers lost the last of the Yuan territories. Eventually, they fled to Liaodong, where the local ruler, Gongsun Kang, eagerly beheaded the two brothers and sent back their heads to Cao Cao as a sign of peace. This worked, as the Gongsun clan was left largely alone to conquer northern Korea, while Cao Cao went on to unify northern China under his banner in the coming years.
