Biography[]

Yuan Yi was a cousin of Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu. He was from Ruyang County, Runan Commandery. During early of his career, he held various positions such as Prefect of Chang'an and Administrator of Shanyang.

He received high praises from many of his contemporaries, notably the scholar Zhang Chao and even Cao Cao. He was said to be knowledgeable, loyal, well-read and digilent towards studying. His work led to an increase in tax collections.

In 190, he joined the Coalition against Dong Zhuo which went as well as we can expect: Totally breaking apart due to everyone having their personal agendas and interests. Yuan Yi participated in the assault at Hu Lao Pass/Gate.

In 192, following the death of Chen Wen, the Inspector of Yang Province, Yuan Shao nominated Yuan Yi as the new Inspector to replace Chen Wen. At the time, Yuan Shao was in a war with Yuan Shu, as usual, who had occupied much of Yang Province. Yuan Yi was killed in Pei County while en route to Yang Province to assume office. Apparently, he was defeated by Yuan Shu and killed by his own men. Seems like familicide is a common theme of the Yuan clan.
