Biography[]

Born a commoner in Dong commandery, Yue Jin was, by all accounts, a rather unimpressive man to look at: short and small. Nevertheless, he joined the forces of Cao Cao in search of adventure, becoming part of his personal guard. He was later sent back to Dong to recruit men, returning with 1,000 soldiers and being promoted to the rank of major and later commandant. Yue Jin distinguished himself multiple times in battle in the coming years. Despite being the "little guy", Yue Jin would often charge in recklessly, fighting like a vicious dog on the frontline with such ferocity that many of his peers took note of his abilities, which saw him earn the title of marquis in 197 AD.

He fought in many more of Cao Cao's campaigns, including against Lü Bu, Zhang Zhao, Zhang Xiu, Sui Gu, Liu Bei, and finally Yuan Shao. Together with Yu Jin and some 5,000 men, Yue Jin crossed into Yuan Shao's territory and began a devastating series of raids, burning camps, plundering supply lines, capturing thousands of soldiers, and forcing some twenty commanders to surrender to him. He later raided the supply train directly supplying Yuan Shao's army, causing a critical shortage that eventually saw the army collapse. He continued to fight in Cao Cao's campaign against Yuan Shao's bickering heirs, Yuan Tan and Shang. Notably, Yue Jin personally led an assault that scaled the walls of Yuan Tan's final stronghold at Nanpi, opening the gates for the rest of the army to enter the city.

Continuing to list Yue Jin's victories is a bit of a chore, as he fought everything from warlords to pirates to Yellow Turbans. His services paid off, however, when he was made a proper general in 206 AD alongside Yu Jin and Zhang Liao. He accompanied Cao Cao's invasion of Jing province but was not present for his devastating defeat at the Battle of Red Cliffs. With his army ravaged by disease, casualties, and lack of supplies, Cao Cao returned north to rebuild his strength, leaving some generals behind to defend against counterattacks. Yue Jin protected Xiangyang commandery, repelling an invasion of Liu Bei's famous general Guan Yu.

Yue Jin's final command came in the campaign against Sun Quan in 217 AD, as he supported the main army under Cao Cao. Eventually, Sun Quan submitted to Wei, and Yue Jin was named General of the Right for his services. His fief was expanded, and one of his sons was also appointed marquis. However, Yue Jin could not enjoy these new privileges for long, as he died shortly after, having gone from a small-statured nobody from Dong commandery to one of Wei's most accomplished generals.
