Biography[]

A military general who switched allegiances several times in his career, intially serving under Tao Qian, even allying with Lü Bu before finally aligning himself with Cao Cao.

A former bandit who intially supported Lü Bu, he was captured and was asked for his allegiance by Cao Cao. Known for his loyalty to his liege and his comrades, he played a significant role in various military campaigns and was instrumental in Cao Cao's efforts to consolidate power in northern China, quelling various rebellions and joining Cao Cao's other generals in many battles.

After the death of Cao Cao, Zang Ba, along with most officials, were promoted. He was placed under the supervision of another general, Cao Xiu. Zang Ba and Cao Xiu had success attacking the Wu forces under command of Lü Fan at the Battle of Dongkou, though the battle ended in a retreat. To take advantage of Lu Fan's defeat after being hit by a storm and retreat south of the river, Zang Ba was sent to attack but Zang Ba's siege engines were burnt and Wu defenders killed several of his men. Zang Ba attempted to retreat but was pursued, thousands of his soldiers killed or captured with subordinate general killed.

After the campaign, he was summoned back to the capital to serve as Bearer of the Golden Mace (chief of police) but he declined, arguing that Cao Pi did not utilize his full potential. Cao Pi, holding a grudge from Zang's arrogance at Cao Cao's funeral, stripped him of his command and sent him to Luoyang. Despite no longer being in the military, Cao Pi still consulted Zang Ba on military matters and treated him respectfully.

After his death, Zang Ba received the posthumous title "Marquis Wei" (literally "Majestic Marquis"). He was succeeded by one of his sons, Zang Ai.
