Biography[]

Zang Hong grew up as any other official would, going through the necessary bureaucratic hoops before ultimately being appointed as a magistrate. He is also credited with convincing Zhang Chao to join the coalition against Dong Zhuo. He accompanied Zhang Chao until 194, where the two finally split, although this was on good terms. With Tao Qian dead and Cao Cao rapidly closing in on Zhang Chao's territory, Chao joined the rebellion of Lü Bu while Zang Hong joined Yuan Shao.

However, as Lü Bu's rebellion crumbled, Zhang Chao was put under siege by Cao Cao's men, holding out for months. Both Zhang Chao and Zang Hong petitioned Yuan Shao for Hong to relieve his friend and overlord, but Shao wouldn't allow it. Zhang Chao died after months of siege. When he learned of Chao's death, an enraged Zang Hong immediately revolted.

He gathered a small force and fortified himself, where he ended up under an identical siege as Zhang Chao did. Hong refused multiple surrender offers, and he and his army slowly began to starve. When the city finally fell, Zang Hong was captured and dragged before Yuan Shao, who intended to pardon him. Yet, Zang Hong continued to defy him and was eventually executed.
