Biography[]

It's unknown when Ze Rong was born, but one day he just showed up at the court of Tao Qian, leading a few hundred people, asking to join him. Tao Qian, who was impressed by his ability to lead and feed people, made Ze Rong a supply officer. Rong proved very talented at handling logistics and was soon appointed as an administrator under Tao Qian.

As happened quite often in China, officials would grow corrupt over time, but Ze Rong became corrupt immediately. He embezzled practically all the funds Tao Qian sent him, spending it all on promoting Buddhism. He built large temples, commissioned expensive statues, held large celebrations, and generally, the people liked him. Someone who didn't like him was Tao Qian, who was well aware of the embezzlement but did nothing to stop it.

When Tao Qian was invaded by Cao Cao in 193 for his supposed killing of Cao Song, Ze Rong gathered several thousand of his followers and immediately deserted. He fled south to Guangling commandery, where he killed the administrator in an ambush and overthrew him. Ze Rong ordered his followers to plunder Guangling until nothing was left, then left the area to rot as they continued to move south.

He later joined Xue Li before betraying and killing him too. He gathered control of Xue Li's army and then left this territory behind as well, joining Liu Yao. Ze Rong would continue his spree of angering everyone in China, attacking Liu Biao, and then betraying Liu Yao, taking command of Yuzhang commandery for himself, directly against Liu Yao's orders. Ze Rong was eventually defeated by Liu Yao, forced to flee into the hills in 195. He never came out of the hills, and he was most likely killed by Nanman tribals.
