Zhang Bao is a playable Yellow Turban faction in Total War: Three Kingdoms added by the Mandate of Heaven DLC. It starts the campaign as a regionless faction in northern China, located in Anping commandery. The faction exists exclusively in 182. Gaining a rank as a duke, king, or emperor will not rename the faction.

Zeal[]
Zeal is the faction resource of Zhang Bao, Zhang Jue, and Zhang Liang. It is gained by their collective deeds and shared between the three brothers. Zeal can be gained through winning battles and taking territory from Han factions. In the specific case of Zhang Bao, Zeal is also earned by attacking enemy units. Zeal ranges from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 600 and is divided into five tiers. For Zhang Bao, a bonus to damage for attacking forces, morale loss for enemy defending forces, and increased industry income is granted on top of the default effects. He also gains guerrilla deployment at lower tiers.

Starting Situation[]
Mandate of Heaven (182)[]
Zhang Bao hurls himself into the fray, brave and bold, in pursuit of a better future for all. Although a fearsome warrior in his own right, Zhang Bao knows that only through union with his brothers, and with the people, will China be freed from the yoke of corruption and tyranny. Legend has it that their redemption of China was prophesised; that together, with an army behind them, the Azure Sky would fall and the Yellow Sky finally rise!
Start: Normal
Zhang Bao starts the Mandate of Heaven campaign as a landless faction in Anping commandery. After defeating Looters under Shen Chen, he will gain his first county. From here, he will receive four missions that, when completed, grant significant bonuses to the Yellow Turban cause. Depending on the completed mission, these are improved ancillaries, a strong 20-turn modifier, the uprising of Gong Du, or a simple monetary reward.
Zhang Bao is the middle of the three Zhang brothers, with Zhang Jue to his north and Zhang Liang to the south. This means he can use Zhang Liang as a buffer against the likes of Liu Hong, Liu Bei and Lu Zhi, while Zhang Bao fights against regional warlords such as Han Fu, Ding Yuan, and Bian Zhang. However, in time, the Mandate War will escalate into the entire Han Empire alliance declaring war on the three brothers, meaning that Zhang Liang cannot hold off on his own forever. This gives Zhang Bao a campaign of carefully balancing northward expansion with southward defence, lest the entire Yellow Turban Rebellion is overrun.
