Biography[]

Zhang He hailed from the present-day Hejian and was an Imperial loyalist in the 180s. He held the rank of major and fought on the frontlines against the Yellow Turban Rebellion led by the Zhang Brothers in 184. Following the Zhang Brothers' demise, he pledged allegiance to Han Fu, but when Yuan Shao took over Han Fu's territory in 190, Zhang He began to serve him. For his devotion to Shao, Zhang was promoted to colonel. After fighting in Yuan Shao's campaign against Gongsun Zan, he was again promoted.

In 200, as the war between Yuan Shao and Cao Cao intensified, Zhang He and Gao Lan were ordered to raid Cao Cao's supply lines. Zhang He opposed the plan, citing the vulnerability of Yuan Shao's own supply lines, but Shao overruled him. As predicted, Wei's forces raided Yuan Shao's supply lines, yet Zhang He was accused of defeatism. In response, he defected to Cao Cao's side and quickly rose in rank due to his knowledge of Yuan Shao's tactics and territory.

Zhang He launched an impressive spree of victories, becoming one of Cao Cao's foremost generals and going toe to toe with figures such as Xiahou Dun and Yuan. The Duke of Wei even trusted him enough to make Zhang He his personal bodyguard at times. Alongside Xiahou Yuan, the two generals pacified Liang province and defeated Ma Chao when he turned against Wei. It wasn't until 215, fifteen years after his defection, that Zhang He had his first taste of defeat, losing to Zhang Fei and being driven back by Liu Bei's forces.

After Xiahou Yuan's death, Zhang He took command near Hanzhong commandery and prevented a breakdown of the chain of command. However, he and Cao Cao were unable to retake the commandery. In 220, Cao Cao passed away, and his son Cao Pi became the Emperor of Wei, with Zhang He as one of his ardent supporters. Under Cao Pi, he continued to fight against Shu-Han and the Kingdom of Wu. He served under three generations of the Cao family, with Cao Rui being his final master. Zhang He ultimately died in 231 due to wounds sustained in combat, still a frontline general despite most likely being in his 60s
