Biography[]

Zhang Ji, originating from Zuli County began his career under Niu Fu, a subordinate of the warlord Dong Zhuo.

In 192, he joined forces with Li Jue and Guo Si to attack Zhu Jun and pillage Chenliu and Yingchuan. After Dong Zhuo’s assassination, Zhang Ji, along with Li Jue and Guo Si, requested amnesty from the new head of the central government, Wang Yun, who refused, prompting them to seize control of Chang'an. Zhang Ji was appointed as General Who Guards the East and stationed in Hongnong Commandery.

In 195, Zhang Ji mediated an internal conflict between Li Jue and Guo Si, suggested Emperor Xian return to Luoyang, and was promoted to General of Agile Cavalry. However, he later had disagreements with Yang Feng and Dong Cheng, leading to an unsuccessful attempt to capture Emperor Xian. In 196, Zhang Ji moved to Nanyang Commandery and was killed by a stray arrow during a battle. His nephew, Zhang Xiu, became a warlord and taking command over Zhang Ji's troops, and his widow, Lady Zou, became a concubine of Cao Cao.

Zhang Ji's widow becoming the concubine of Cao Cao angered Zhang Xiu which you can read on his own biography page of what happened after that.
