Biography[]

Zhang Liang was one of the two brothers of Zhang Jue and a major leader of the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Before the rebellion, he learned numerous supposedly magical practices from Jue and had subscribed to the Way of the Great Peace. Zhang Liang was critical in the planning stages of the rebellion, yet the Zhang brothers were forced to make their move earlier thanks to the imperial court catching word of the plot against them. Despite this setback, the initial outbreak was successful, with hundreds of thousands of rebels rising up across China.

During the course of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, Zhang Liang took the title of "Lord of Man General" or General of the People, while Zhang Jue became the General of Heaven and Zhang Bao the General of Land. This way, each brother represented/commanded one of the key elements of the Way of the Great Peace, that being heaven, earth, and the people. In the initial stages of the rebellion, Zhang Jue had taken control of the main Yellow Turban armies against Lu Zhi, yet he lost multiple battles and fatally fell ill shortly after. This resulted in Zhang Liang taking over his troops and repelling numerous failed assaults by Lu Zhi.

Lu Zhi would be disgraced by a eunuch and taken out of the picture during the rebellion, yet his replacement, Dong Zhuo, fared little better against the Yellow Turbans, who continued to hold off imperial assaults regularly. Dong Zhuo, too, was replaced by Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun, who met the same fate as their predecessors. After one particular victory, Zhang Liang and his Yellow Turbans settled down for a night of rest and celebration. With their guard down, the defeated Han forces waited until dark, turned around, and launched a surprise attack on the Yellow Turban camp which lasted throughout the night. By the next day, Zhang Liang and most of his army lay dead. His head was unceremoniously cut off and sent back to Luoyang as a trophy. What scattered survivors remained of Liang's former army were largely hunted down or drowned trying to cross the Yellow River to safety, leaving Zhang Bao as the last of the three brothers though he, too, would die shortly after, ending the Yellow Turban Rebellion in the same year it had broken out.
