Biography[]

A Taoist leader and warlord. He was the third generation "Celestial Master" (a Taoist religious order) who controlled a state in Hanzhong region.

Zhang Lu's rule in Hanzhong was surprisingly, for that time, humane and civilized along with being marked by the promotion of Taoist principles,:roads were built throughout the territory with rest stops and foods provided free of charge, the taxes and donations taken from the people were not to be used for amusement, but instead for the support of the common people. His state functioned with a unique blend of religious and secular authority, and he maintained a strong following among the local population and army that neither Cao Cao or Li Jue could easily defeat him. His rule over Hanzhong was recognized by the Han government, earning him the titles of General of the Household Who Guards Civilians and Administrator of Hanning.

In 215, Zhang Lu surrendered to Cao Cao after a lengthy and strategic conflict. Cao Cao, recognizing Zhang Lu's influence and leadership, treated him with respect and appointed him as General who Guards the South and enfeoffed his five sons as marquises. Zhang Lu also married his daughter to one of Cao Cao's sons.

Zhang Lu died in 216 and was honoured with the posthumous title "Marquis Yuan" by the Han Imperial court. His sons continued to lead the "Five Pecks of Rice" Taoist Order, which later evolved into the one of the two major Taoist schools that survive to modern times known as Zhengyi Dao.

Trivia[]

Zhang Lu was planned to be a unique character, yet this appears to have been scrapped during development. While he has no unique portrait, he does have his own armour ancillary.
