Biography[]

It is unknown when Zhang Miao was born, but he first appears climbing the bureaucratic ladder in the late 180s. He joined the coalition against Dong Zhuo alongside his brother, Zhang Chao. He befriended imporant figures in the coalition, including both Cao Cao and Yuan Shao. However, he would often critique Yuan Shao's leadership. At one point, Shao simply had enough and ordered Miao to be killed, yet Cao Cao convinced him to let Miao live.

Zhang Miao continued to serve Cao Cao in gratitude, and historically, he should really be a member of Cao Cao in 190, not Zhang Chao. Nonetheless, after the death of Tao Qian, with his younger brother threatened by Cao Cao's expanding borders, Miao joined Lü Bu's rebellion. When Lü Bu's revolt ultimately failed in 195, he abandoned both Chao and his own family, both of which would later die in a siege.

He accompanied Lü Bu to the lands of Liu Bei, where they revolted once more. Yet, when this rebellion also failed to succeed, Lü Bu was captured and executed. Zhang Miao gathered what remained of his and Lü Bu's men and fled southwest towards the lands of Yuan Shu, but was ultimately betrayed and killed by his own men, who scattered after his death.
