Biography[]

Born in Shu commandery, Zhang Song was an Attendant Officer under the governor of Yi Province, Liu Zhang. He first became prominent serving as an emissary to Cao Cao following the latter's takeover of Jing Province following the death of Liu Biao. Cao Cao had little to no interest in Zhang Song and disregarded him, which would infuriate him. Upon returning to Yi Province, Zhang Song urged Liu Zhang over and over to cut all ties with Cao Cao, an advice born more out of spite than strategy. Zhang Song further amplified this stance following Cao Cao's defeat at the Battle of Red Cliffs. With other advisers joining in, Liu Zhang relented and began aligning himself with Liu Bei instead. Unbeknownst to Liu Zhang, Zhang Song had more or less grown to hate him during this time. Alongside his friend Fa Zheng, Zhang Song had secretly pledged himself to Liu Bei, essentially acting as a double agent in Yi Province.

Whereas Fa Zheng would bide his time and remain a prominent figure long after the downfall of Liu Zhang, it could be argued that Zhang Song jumped the gun a bit. Specifically, he began more or less openly recommending Liu Bei -- through both spoken words and sent letters -- to attack Liu Zhang. Zhang's reign was plagued with internal rebellions, particularly Zhang Lu's, which he failed to put down and Zhang Song urged Liu Bei to directly restore order to Yi Province. While this would eventually come to pass, Zhang Song was making moves before the plot against Liu Zhang was fully ready. Subsequently, he was ratted out by his own brother who was still loyal to Liu Zhang, and Zhang Song would be arrested and executed for treason in 211. The death of Zhang Song forced the conspiracy's hand, and they somewhat chaotically moved against Liu Zhang shortly after, eventually fully ousting him from Yi Province by 214 with the aid of Liu Bei's forces.
