Biography[]

Born in Pengcheng commandery, Zhang Zhao was by all accounts a man who sought little glory, yet became famous nonetheless. An accomplished scholar and academic in his early years, Zhang Zhao was bombarded with regional and provincial appointments left and right, all of which he refused. Instead, he became a relatively low-level bureaucrat under his friend, Wang Lang. When Wang Lang's territory collapsed, Zhang Zhao joined the conqueror Sun Ce instead, serving as chief of his administration. After this point, not one proposal, military or civilian, reached Sun Ce's ears without first passing by Zhang Zhao.

After Sun Ce's death, his brother and successor Sun Quan went into the traditional period of mourning. Zhang Zhao's "gentle" words for the griefing brother were that by the time he was done mourning the state his brother left behind would have collapsed unless he took action now. Under Sun Quan, Zhang Zhao acted as Prime Minister and, for the first few years, tutor and quasi-regent to Sun Quan. When Sun Quan was away on military campaigns, Zhang Zhao was left in charge to run the day-to-day government at home. That is not to say that he did not fight, as Zhang Zhao personally led some campaigns as well, most notable of which one against Chen Deng in 208 AD.

Around the same time, With Cao Cao consolidating his power over more and more of China, Zhang Zhao urged Sun Quan to surrender to Cao Cao. This marks one of the few times where he was overruled, as Sun Quan sided with Zhou Yu who opted to fight Cao Cao, leading to the events of the Battle of Red Cliffs. Once Sun Quan declared himself King of Wu in 221 AD, Zhang Zhao was notably skipped over for the position of Chancellor, which went to Sun Shao. The reason for this is unknown, with some arguing this was the result of lingering frustration surrounding the prelude to the Battle of Red Cliffs between Sun Quan and Zhang Zhao.

One way or another, Zhang Zhao probably didn't take the news well. While he was granted the title of Marquis soon after the founding of Wu, he nevertheless resigned every office he held and went into retirement on grounds of old age and illness. He rarely took up the occasional minor post and sometimes made an appearance at court, but Zhang Zhao spent most of his time going back to his early years of scholarship. Neither he nor Sun Quan spoke often about their relationship, but when they did, a feeling of resentment was a common undertone. Zhang Zhao died in 236 AD.
